This initiative has as ambassador the Secretary of State for Citizenship and Equality / Secretária de Estado para a Cidadania e a Igualdade, Rosa Monteiro, and is the result of a partnership between the Health and Pharmacy Museum/ Museu da Farmácia, the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra / Museu da Ciência da Universidade de Coimbra, the Marionette Museum / Museu da Marioneta, the Orient Museum / Museu do Oriente and the National Museum of Ethnology / Museu Nacional de Etnologia.

Establishing a bridge between the present and the past, we propose a journey to different continents, over the centuries, through masks, an element that has become part of the daily lives of all citizens of the world, a symbol of the diversity that exists between civilizations, countries, cultures and populations.

Revealing the historical interest of the mask throughout the course of human history, this exhibition brings together 14 masks from different museums and cultures, from healer to sorcerer masks, from protection to tradition masks, from theater to ceremony masks.

“A World of Masks”, also has an Augmented Reality component, a technology that allows you to project virtual content, such as images, in the real world. Through simple reading with a mobile phone with a QR Code reader, the visitor will be able to travel in time and “wear”, in a virtual way, the masks that make up the exhibition.

The virtual exhibition, still available at www.ummundodemascaras.com, was inaugurated on the 18th of May, International Museum Day 2020, has registered so far more than 9.000 visitors.
